QUOTABLE QUOTES

BY CHARLES GATEWOOD

At their best, tattoo quotes sum up an entire sensibility in a few witty words. Here, then, are some of my favorite stories and sayings.

Annie Sprinkle

“I got tattoos for purely antisocial reasons, and now people do it for social acceptance. I miss the individualism.”

—Mike Ness of Social Distortion

“I was excited about getting my first tattoo, but I was only twelve, so I had to hide it from my mother.”

—Mark Wahlberg

“I had the unique experience of stretching skin for Spider Webb as he tattooed. He always insisted that I wear my fancy, frilly Fredericks of Hollywood French maid’s costume. My favorite part of the job was seeing women, after their first tattoo, get that special ‘tattoo glow’ on their faces.”

—Annie Sprinkle

“I did my first tattoo myself—it was supposed to be a band logo, but I never finished it. I wanted to remove it after a month, because it was ugly and I looked like a convict. Someone said I should get a wet towel, sprinkle salt on it and rub the tattoo, which turned out to be a pretty cruel joke, because all I did was sit there, grinding fucking salt into this tattoo, which hurt like hell and only made it brighter.”

—Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters

Mike Ness is the frontman of Social Distortion, not Social Acceptance. Kind of an ironic typo, really…
