Old Turkey Gobbler, with high-arched head, said to his mates gathered ’round,

“Tomorrow’s Thanksgiving,” he proudly said, “And none of us must be found.”

Well, “Forewarned is forearmed,” the saying goes,

But, next day, cold and still, he hung by his legs in the shed.

—A poem recited every Thanksgiving by my father, Robert “Pawnee” Baxter, when I was a boy. I’m sure that he learned it from his father. God rest his soul. God rest Turkey Gobbler’s soul, too.
