ALBERTA BOUND TATTOO & ARTS FESTIVAL

WE JUST GOT BACK TODAY!

We just returned from Steve and Lindsay Peace’s Alberta Bound Tattoo & Arts Festival held this weekend in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Once again, Peace produced a truly stellar event. From the accommodations at the Westin, to the perfectly laid out convention site, Recession or not, Peace and his crew gave a “clinic” on producing a successful world-class event. The BMO Centre (located adjacent to the new Casino and the Calgary Flames hockey complex) featured over one-hundred-and-thirty artist and vendor booths in a slick venue with excellent sound, live bands, sideshow attractions (human pincushion and sword swallower Guinea Pig) and a veritable Canasta deck of artist seminars and legendary tattoo artists, including Jime Litwalk from Hart & Huntington, Dan Smith of L.A. Ink, Boog, Paul Scarrott, Bob Tyrrell, Joe Capobianco, Nick Chaboya, Aaron Bell, Paul Jeffries, Larry Brogan, Roonui, Kurt Wiscombe, Ron Hoskins, Steve Moore, Rob Thomas, Jamie Izumi, Cory Ferguson, Randy Howell, Steve Estevez… and that’s just scratching the surface.

With the square footage scaled down from last year (previously, another entire hall held special events like the dodge ball tournament and the roller derby exhibition), the floor plan was easy to navigate and there was plenty to see and do. As far as seminars, there were several seven-hour blood borne pathogen and sterilization classes, Nick Chaboya’s “Canvas to Skin,” Bob Tyrrell on black & gray, Dave Nestler teaching acrylic painting basics, Larry Brogan explaining advanced tattoo techniques, Joe Capobianco’s “Dirty Little Secrets,” Jime Litwalk on “Simplicity for Longevity” and Kirt Silver’s “Back to Reality” color symposium—all for very affordable prices, I might add. It’s a real plus to have these tricks-of-the-trade seminars available for the visiting artists at tattoo conventions. Once again, Peace made sure that education and instruction were teamed with innovative contests (a $1,000 prize was awarded to the winner of Saturday’s “Tattoo a Zombie” competition), a free shuttle for artists to and from the hotel, a custom bike show and even coloring books for the kids. Once again, the promoters thought of everything.

That’s it for today. We’ll be getting a raft of tattoo photos to share with you later this week. But for now, here’s a few snapshots I took when I first arrived. P.S. Click to enlarge the images.

Hey Bob, it was a pleasure to meet you at the Calgary tattoo show. I will keep in touch with you, with any new stuff that i get to do. I work in a small town so don’t get to do stuff that I like to all to often.

Thanks for the compliment, it meant alot to me.

    Hi Bob,

Awesome seeing you and Mary, your both looking great.

Steve Peace and crew pulled off yet another kick ass tattoo convention, in my opinion the best in North America. They bend over backwards to give the artists as well as the public the best time possible. The American convention promoters should take some lessons from our Canadian neighbors.

Due to an over site on my part, a package that I sent containing my seminar booklets did not make it in time but Steve made sure I got a ride to Staples to get new copies printed and even had one of his staff run back to pick it up for me. Thanks to Andrew and Mark for the help, you guys saved the day.

My seminar went great, the best one yet and some of the attendees have already messaged me with their thanks.

I will be looking forward to another great time next year.

    Be well,
    Larry Brogan
